Watched as part of Funny Friday, with my mate, I picked Twin Town to revisit, as we both haven’t seen it in years, Stu had said a couple of decades for him).
It’s not really aged, except maybe the cars and it being pre mobile phone era and if you grew up in these times, it’s spot on for what really goes in poverty stricken areas. This being Swansea in the 90’s at a time when joyriding was huge, a time where me and my mates would often go for a night out.
However, outside the UK I can’t see people understanding what is, one of the funniest films ever made. I hope I’m wrong and it has a huge following worldwide, but I can’t see it.
The first 2 acts have some of the most iconic and funny sequences ever put to film, but it’s the third act where the story takes a sharp turn into a really dark place and is what sets Twin Town apart from most comedy films. Three Kings takes a similar path but nowhere near as dark (though it’s more about sentiment and a message, which is remarkably done).
The “twins” are funny as hell, but in real life you would absolutely despise them, if you knew them. Complete wasters, scum, druggies who pinch cars and cause havoc. However, Kevin Allen has created 2 lovable rogues and it is testament to his abilities. Everyone is larger than life and this is how it actually is in these areas. I luckily grew up in a posh, affluent area of South Wales but I did spend a significant amount of time in these areas in my late teens and throughout my 20’s.
Twin Town will live forever as close as a documentary a comedy could ever be.
Side NB: My father was in school with Fatty Lewis.
