If you think you heard Mr Krabs...you did
Positives include the set and costume design and the inclusion of many dogs. Everything else isn’t great. The camera-work and editing is horrible and like nobody talks? It’s so weird going through a 5 minute scene just going from quick cut to quick cut without a single word spoken during the whole thing, I’ve just never seen anything like it. I swear Karl Urban doesn’t talk until 45 minutes in.
I mean in the first ten minutes you can already identify all the problems this movie will have. White-savior story, a forbidden romance inspired by Pocahontas, an authentic late-2000s grey filter on everything so you can barely make out people’s faces. More egregious to me is this fully embraces the hyper-violent trend from the 2000s, just so unnecessary I hate it. Speaking of trends, I got some serious Helm’s deep lotr vibes but maybe that’s just because Karl Urban is here.
And for such literally vibrant cultures that the American Indian tribes have in reality, here they are color graded and costumed to look like they are wearing and living in all grey. The characterizations are not the worst things in the world but about what you would expect in the 2000s.
Honestly the Vikings get a tougher break here. Other than Karl Urban of course, they are all bloodthirsty, racist, axe-wielding maniacs who kill everyone in there path. From the opening text about how they killed everyone in North America that they came across you knew this was going to be bad. I don’t think any of them have a single line other than how they want to kill someone. Like I’m sure some people feel that makes them bad-ass but for me it’s so boring and distractingly ahistorical.
Such a shame because that poster might be the sickest one I’ve seen in years.
