The worst part of watching this (apart from the very obvious) was that I didn't read what it was about beforehand, and for the first thirty minutes, I kept telling myself that it's just fiction so I didn't turn it off. Not much later, I realised this was based on a true story.
With just a few details I could tell which story was based on. The story of Sylvia Likens is one that you read about it once, and then you never forget it. If you think this is hard to watch, the real events feel much worse, and Sylvia didn't have a David, she didn't have anyone to help her. Her death was a result of an insane amount of people turning a blind eye to a girl in a clear state of abuse, her parents, the school, neighbours, everyone failed her.
I understand the why for involving a ‘hero’ figure and some type of revenge for the sake of the movie, but it's just disrespectful. Sylvia's real abusers got out of jail, some weren't charged, and one even got to live her life normally as a teacher. Her real story was even more horrible and should be told as such, no sugarcoating for the sake of not leaving an audience unsatisfied.
