I can't tell if this movie (and the book) genuinely affects me or if I just like watching beautiful people decay in slow motion, but either way it works. Beauty and rot sitting side by side is basically my favorite genre, and if you throw a codependent relationship in there I'm happily trapped with them
What actually breaks the spell for me is when the film lets "reality" slip in, or when the characters almost notice it themselves. I don't want that. I want to stay inside the game with them. For me, the film is at its best when everything is suspended in that delicate moment, it's like a piece of fruit at its sweetest point, soft and perfect and seconds away from going bad.
