i feel like it was advertised to me a bit differently, because i expected something less generic and less plain. instead the story was pretty predictable from a to z. which wasn’t the best surprise. that being said, the acting was good. philip seymour hoffman is obviously amazing, and i wish i enjoyed his part more because he’s not in as many things as i’d like, but the movie itself didn’t give me enough to fully love it. the casino owner was fun though, i actually enjoyed him whenever he showed up.

This film turned out to be a very lovely surprise, it’s an absolutely brilliant film, whether that’s mostly down to the fact that Phillip Seymour Hoffman gave a stellar performance or not. It’s no surprise either that Hoffman’s performance was superb, he gives such a subtle but melancholic impression of gambling and the depressing life it leads to. His character has a very slight resemblance to his wonderful character in Boogie Nights (1998), Scotty J. This film has such a bleak, early-2000s film feel to it (even though it’s set in the 80s), almost remnant of Lars And The Real Girl (2007). Unexpected delight I’m happy I found it.
