Watching now the hour-long pilot for Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
From the very beginning, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a work of unbelievable majesty, grand strategy, political depth. Growing up I always thought of this as the Babylon 5 of Japanese science fiction, in that it's better than the competition in the ways that mattered to me.
The fleet coming in to dock didn't just give me goosebumps, it made me shiver. Somehow, seeing the contest between two geniuses begin is even more amazing than that. The parallels between the two of them, the stark differences in their positions, the incredible ambitions they burden themselves with. I love the idiocy of their respective commanders, those two small-minded buffoons, giving rise to a sense that their struggle extends to the enemy within.
Unbelievable. Fucking love this shit.
"This is my first battle." "Everyone has a first time. The problem is, when does it end?"
