Director- John Cassavetes.Good film for a debut. This is the first Csassavetes I have seen, so I had no expectations from this work. This makes the film all the more enjoyable. The music choice in the film is phenomenal. I later learnt that it is by Charles Mingus. The film is of a low budget which adds to its experimental nature that one can see with a director's debut film. The character interactions were interesting, but the dialogue wasn't engaging due to its simplicity. A bit of color could have benefited the film. The message behind the film is interesting, with the themes centering around judging a book by its cover and that too, incorrectly. The second half has a rushed feel, which I have seen many new directors have with their first works. The acting by the non-actors was good enough. The emphasis on improvisation over method acting can be seen in this film. The emphasis is on characters in their current state and their on-the-spot interactions, which makes the conversations appear more natural and realistic. One can see how similar conversations could happen in their day-to-day lives in the fifties. I don't know how developed Cassavete's style is in this film, as I have nothing to compare it to, having seen no other film of his.The film shows racial issues arising due to tension in a good enough manner without making it preachy.Overall, a good film which makes me want to watch A Woman Under the Influence soon.
