Long Movie Marathon Part II
ive said it once and i will say it again, masaki kobayashi does not miss.
this is simply an insanely comprehensive and in depth look at some of the most heinous criminals in human history both being punished and being let off scott-free in a “pick and choose” kind of nature, as well as some of the acts they carried out. as someone who has researched imperial japan and the atrocities perpetrated by them in some depth but still am relatively uneducated on the justice that was carried out after, i was very intrigued when i saw that MK had made a 4 and a half hour documentary about the criminals from that regime being sentenced or let off (which was based purely on the value of their experience, knowledge, or scientific data), and if you are familiar with MK or his works in any fashion, you’d know he’d be disgusted by the spineless and broken justice that was shown during these trials. im not gonna spoil too much but it really was fantastic, kei satō’s narrating was so unbelievably spot on in combination with MK’s writing, it really almost gave herzog vibes. overall that was extremely educational, thought provoking, and incredibly well made and shot.
