An important issue is told in Butcher’s Stain, that being the ever growing issue of work gossip, and not being able to speak your opinions about certain topics not only in the work field, but online. This is a Jewish short film, which I think accounts for its review bombing, but it actually isn’t saying anything pro-Israel. In fact, our main character posts about the disgusting acts happening in Gaza, and his co-worker takes it to be that he is pro-terrorism. Unfortunately, we live in a world where political opinions should be kept to ourselves. Which I have no problem with, but if people feel they want to use their voice and platform to spread a message, let them do so.

Butcher’s Stain is frustrating because it constantly feels like it’s on the verge of saying something meaningful, and then backs away at the last second. Scene after scene builds toward what seems like an important statement about violence, power, and responsibility, but the film repeatedly loses its nerve.
The story carefully avoids engaging with the genocide Israel is committing. The backdrop is there and the tension is there, but the film refuses to confront it directly. It feels like the writers wanted the weight of the issue without the courage to actually address it.
There are moments of strong acting and a few visually striking scenes, which keep the film from being a complete miss. But overall, Butcher’s Stain is a story that stops itself from saying the thing it clearly needs to say.

Finally got round to this one. Been the last one remaining from its Oscar category for ages. I think it’s a really interesting story and immerses you within it straight away. Acting was great and really emotive at times.
