Watched this with my whole family, cousins, uncles, aunts, basically everyone, and I have to say this is the greatest action film of all time! I’ve heard a lot of good things about the second film, but for now this is easily my number one. The pacing is perfect, it never slows down, and it’s just effortlessly cool from start to finish. The action is insane, the combat scenes are superb, and the soundtrack during the fights hits so hard, it fits the chaos perfectly. Even my dad loved it, first time he actually stayed up the whole movie haha.
The film follows a SWAT team entering a rundown apartment building controlled by a ruthless crime lord, and things go wrong almost immediately. What should have been a simple operation turns into a full survival mission, with every floor becoming more dangerous than the last. The film wastes no time, it just throws you straight into the situation and keeps building tension as the team gets picked off one by one.
Gareth Evans’ direction is brilliant here. The camerawork puts you right inside the action, making every punch, kick, and hit feel real and painful. The choreography is on another level, especially with Iko Uwais, every fight feels fast, brutal, and very precise. There’s also something almost pure about the film. It doesn’t try to overcomplicate the story, it focuses completely on action and execution, and that’s what makes it so effective.
There’s even a bit more under the surface with the brother dynamic and the idea of survival in a system where you are trapped and forced to fight your way out. It’s simple, but it works perfectly for what the film is trying to do.
This is one of those films where you just sit there after and think wow.. that was crazy. Pure action, no wasted time, just relentless from beginning to end.
