Much like whether or not climate change is real, I’m conflicted.
I kid, climate change is real but so are this film’s third act problems. What begins as a pretty immersive and, belying its low-budget, atmospheric exercise, devolves into a cgi shlock fest that tramples (stampedes?) over everything it’s built.
It ends as a disaster movie, but also a spirit movie, but also an apocalypse movie, but also a climate change movie, but also a Wendigo movie. After a solid theme of the climate fighting back through the first two thirds, it muddles everything up and (something that Wendigo didn’t do) goes past its budget for the worse. If you’re going to do a CGI moose horse monster spirit, it better look damn good. It… does… not…
I had high hopes for this, especially after I loved Wendigo. Most of it is pretty competent and effective though, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying it.
Ultimately, eco-horror deserves better. Onto the next Fessenden.
