I am a huge David Sedaris fan, and anytime I read one of his books there’s always at least one story in there that makes me think “why haven’t they made this into a movie?” The apple picking/gem cutting stories were a couple of them. I do think it’s odd that they zeroed in on the religious side of those stories, but I think the bigger thing we’re meant to take away from it is the realities of a gay man coming to understand his place in a weird, mean world…and it’s sad. I do wonder how much David contributed to the film, because it was not even close to as funny as his writing style. Could have been much better and I wish that David Sedaris would just commit and write a screenplay about his life.
