the 3.3 average for this film on this app is absolutely insane when it’s arguably second best after twok. i think this film corrects the only thing that’s wrong with twok and that’s kirk’s reaction to spocks death at the end. at the end of twok he’s way too chill about it and the immediate acceptance is just so out of character. there’s AT LEAST 5 different examples of them putting the entire enterprise, crew members lives or their own careers in jeopardy specifically to rescue the other from death throughout the original series, it’s established repeatedly throughout that they’re willing to risk literally everything for each other which is why the ending of twok is so out of character for kirk (albeit it’s still a nice and convenient ending). but this film corrects it immediately by having kirk lament over the loss of spock within the first few lines of the film in a way that’s far more in line with his character and then him and the rest of the main crew go on a mission that they’re forbidden to go on to get spock back and return his katra to his body. the whole thing is so peak and i do NOT understand why people don’t think it’s a worthy follow up to twok. one of my favourite moments in the entirety of the trek franchise is the scene between sarek and kirk, shatner really reminds u that he can actually act when he locks in and mark lenard as sarek is just one of my favourite characters in general. i love this movie so much.
