2006 | Dee Wallace | Book Adaptations
Chris Sivertson’s “The Lost” is an adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s book of the same name and had I only seen this film, I’d have zero interest in reading the book. It’s a very good book. This is a terrible adaptation.
It stays close to Ketchum’s book, but makes changes, all of them for the worse. It neglects all characters that are not Ray and looses all of the character moments from the book. It’s two hours long and you know jack shit about the characters. The relationship between Schilling and Ed as well as the one between Ed and Sally are practically nonexistent. The screenplay sucks ass. Looses pretty much all of what made the book great, except for the fucked-up parts and the violence, which isn’t even impactful or effective cause the film is terribly directed and made.
And as usual for Ketchum adaptations, this film has no budget and is a cheap piece of shit. I’m not kidding when I say that this is one of the worst directed films I’ve ever seen. I hate the direction, the cinematography is shit, the lighting terrible, the soundtrack absolutely atrocious. This film is absolutely terribly directed.
And the performances are terrible too. At first, I thought Marc Senter’s Ray Pye could actually work, but he’s nothing but a caricature. This film also stars Robin Sydney of “Gingerdead Man” and “Evil Bong” fame and I don’t mean to be rude, but she can’t act. She’s better off staying with Full Moon and starring in embarrassing, silly and shitty films cause her trying something serious was painful to watch. And even veteran actors like Dee Wallace are bad.
Given the history of Ketchum adaptations, I didn’t expect anything great or as good as the book, but I hoped for something decent and watchable. Disappointment would be putting it mildly. A truly bad, incompetently and ineffectively made film.
