objectively terrible, but i was scarily invested in this. i went in with little to no expectations, but i have to admit, i was blown out of the water! definitely a new favourite of mine, somehow? i’m a simple girl, i yearn for the swamp… the pit, even.
i love how focused this film is on building the characters, but in that effort it seems the horror elements got forgotten. there’s a few good scares here and there, the mystery surrounding the pit is engaging, there’s great use of practical effects (and whatever that cgi shadow thing was), but there’s no visual horror here. which is completely fine, i love psychological horror, i just wish they’d utilized it more! it felt needed in the plot and the lack of it weighed heavy as the runtime went on.
ada’s story genuinely broke my heart, i wasn’t expecting it to be so cathartic. seeing that guilt pile up within her and watching as all her plans hit dead ends was like putting salt in a wound. she didn’t deserve anything that happened to her :( i’m genuinely so torn up over it rn, wallowing in my tears.
i loved the setting too! it reminded me of resident evil 7, which was further pushed by the addition of ada’s batshit family. like why was her mom literally marguerite baker reincarnated??? and her dad had the exact same haircut as jack 😭 all hicks are the same!!!
