In his directorial debut, Ryan Coogler handles a heartbreakingly, frustratingly familiar story with delicacy but without hesitancy.
It reads as a simple life and a simple watch... because Oscar was like anybody else — a human living day-to-day for his family, trying to live a good life for his daughter. He was 22 freaking years old, man.
It is depressing that it's been 12 years since this release and the injustices in our country have only continued. I find it interesting that so many cops have "mistaken their gun for a taser" since this incident. It's almost like the lying POS getting MONTHS in jail for blatant murder emboldened other murderers with a badge.
Coogler is amazing. His writing is gas. I will finish his filmography soon, though I'm interested to see if his style can seep through absolute mid (that may be generous) that is Marvel.
