As I got older, I realized that while all of that is true, it is only one side of the story. The India we live in today is also shaped by corruption, social divisions, religious intolerance, and people who often confuse criticism with a lack of patriotism.

That's why Swades hit me so hard. It doesn't try to convince us that India is perfect, nor does it paint the country as hopeless. Instead, it shows India as it is: beautiful, complicated, frustrating, and full of potential. The film celebrates the country's culture and people while also confronting issues like poverty, caste discrimination, and lack of education.

What I loved most about Swades is how it redefines patriotism. It suggests that loving your country is not about blindly defending it or pretending its problems do not exist. Real patriotism is caring enough to acknowledge those problems and wanting to make things better. In a time when criticism is often mistaken for disloyalty, that message feels more relevant than ever.

More than twenty years later, Swades still feels fresh because many of the issues it highlights continue to exist. Watching it made me reflect not only on the India I grew up reading about but also on the India I see around me today. That is what makes the film so powerful. It does not just make you feel proud of your country. It encourages you to think about your place in it and the role you can play in shaping its future.

Genuinely such a feel good movie I love Shahrukh khans role and I love gitli. CHIKU IS SO CUTE it reminded me of my childhood pet rabbit whom we named chiku 😭 so many nice songs added to my playlist. It was a 3 hour long movie but it felt short. I enjoyed watching it. I love how he just kept doing side quests after side quests and I love the atmosphere of the movie do not aks me to explain. I loved the pond near the temple and in the beginning of the movie the tree at the old age house under which the old women were sitting I could sleep a DISGUSTING nap there 🤤 also mohan and gitli are kinda cute I love slow burn romantic tension in media. Lowkey for a minute I could relate with gitli when she said she don’t wanna get married 😛 she’s such a feminist baddie oml and she’s good with calculations. Mohan is… there I guess. But they’re cute icl 😂✌️ I loved all the characters. Lwokey propaganda to stop Indians from going out idk if it worked tho

my first bollywood movie!!! (although I did watch one before in 8th grade in English class but I don't remember the name) my first SRK movie!!! and omg it was so much fun!!

yes, there are probably many things to point out. but before saying anything this is my perspective as someone who is not indian and never went to india, so I might be wrong in my opinions. but I felt it was neo liberal, very american centered, and the interesting social comments were kinda dealt at surface level which imo simplifies the systemic issues presented here. it's very 2004, and yet... the message it at heart is absolutely beautiful. yeah, it's sometimes a bit clumsy, but the core here is humanity, love, diversity, and how we can bring change everyday, even with small actions, even when we don't have things all figured out, or all completely right.

the three hours were a bit long and I had to take a few breaks tbh, but honestly it's so entertaining and fun. the main relationship OMG it's so sweet. I'm not familiar with bollywood/Indian films codes and norms (or only lightly/with western cliches) but this made me want to see muuuuch more of it. the songs were beautiful, the acting was amazing, the characters were all so unique and loveable.

but god the leads here are absolutely phenomenal. gita is THE QUEEN. I love a strong female lead who's feminist and isn't scared to say her truth and stand her principles EVEN with her love interest. she brings so much shine to this movie. I was so sad to learn the actress only did one movie (this one). and SRK ? sir I wasn't familiar with your GAME. I understand why he's one of the most famous indian actor this guy DELIVERS. a small thing I absolutely loved here is how safe and good masculinity is portrayed here ?? we see mohan crying various time in the movie and that genuinely was so good to see on screen ? just showing how men are good men by feeling things, by being empathetic and truly acting to make things better around them. loved it.
