That’s how you do it, a proper crime noir with many terrific scenes and fantastic characters. The film opens with an exhilarating train heist, starting the film off with a gritty bang and setting the scene for a very exciting story. The psychopathic ringleader of the criminal gang is such a brilliant character, he’s ruthless and has an overpowering mother complex which weirdly doesn’t diminish his chilling nature. I’ve seen quite a lot of mid-century noirs and I’ve got to say this one had something to it that gives it a slight edge against the others I’ve seen, it might’ve been the more intense action or variety of location, either way I really enjoyed this film. The introduction of an undercover detective was really cool and did give the film so much more excitement and a more convincing brutality, I liked the prison scenes where the detective was socialising with the gang leader. That final sequence was pure magnificence, it had the true essence of a noir but with a more nuanced dramatic tone, absolutely fantastic stuff.

Was inspired to watch in part by seeing it referenced in Ricochet. Had always wanted to see Cagney movies because I grew up with the references, he was still so big and in the public conscious by the 90s, hell there's even references in the first ninja turtles movie and the Simpsons. Plus I'd seen so many clips from film docos and film noir classes and what not. So it was great to finally see one, and I was not disappointed. This goes hard. Every seen is either setting up tension and drama or it's resolving the tension. On my toes for the whole runtime.
