I didn’t realize watching as a kid that every antagonist is 100% in the right. When Sarah Silverman asks him to pay the rent cause he hasn’t paid in 3 months, or when the principal says they need parental permission to organize a field trip, they are making perfectly reasonable requests. Rather than rooting for what we would do in the situation, we are rooting for the absolutely insane Jack Black, who impersonates a teacher and kidnaps 5th graders for his own vanity project. It is this predicament that makes it an even more interesting watch as an adult.
This is a traditional 2000s comedy premise, but entirely set in the real world. This dichotomy between what we think we want, and what we actually want makes School of Rock so much more interesting.
Oh, and it’s straight up hilarious.
