Edward Van Sloan playing another doctor that knows a lot about a particular monster, and warns everyone of the danger, just to have no one listen till the last minute. Thats exactly what I want to see.
The Mummy is very similar to Dracula, but has enough differences, to be seen as a different movie. I really like the dark atmosphere, and the creepy scenes where the camera lingers a bit too long. The scene where the mummy walks away and that guy is hysterically laughing is super unsettling, which was really cool. Also Boris Karloff was pretty much born to play creepy characters, especially with that bone structure. Universal knew they struck gold with him.
The most unrealistic thing in this entire movie is the British guy saying "The British Museum works for science, not for loot.” When has that ever been true??💀
I will say the film didn’t age well, in terms of portraying Egyptians. There was definitely a lot of racist and backwards views being used while creating the movie. Such as the white scientist all being the hero’s, and all of the local Egyptians being disposable characters, who are viewed as non sensical at moments. The way Egypt portrayed as some "exotic” place for Westerners to explore just goes back to old orientalist stereotypes. Not to mention all the actors are Europeans or Americans. (some are in literal brown face paint) I’m not saying any of this is surprising for that decade, but it’s still very sad.
Overall, I really enjoyed it! I’m gonna watch the Brendan Fraser one next
