Copying Beethoven is a 2006 film starring Diane Kruger, who underacts her way into becoming a female copyist for Ed Harris’s overacted Ludwig Van Beethoven.
Harris plays Beethoven as a friendless old man who loves his nephew Karl and desires love from others even while Karl keeps stealing from him. As such, his Beethoven feels too pick-me sympathetic for me to believe the character, and then alternates that teddy bear tone with borderline personality turns of temper.
The overall film has very little control over its tone or pacing, and the color scheme is gray and dull. As history it’s nonsense, both in its portrayal of Beethoven and in its completely made up central relationship between Beethoven and a female copyist.
The best sequence to me was Beethoven conducting his 9th Symphony, and even that is spoiled for me by putting Diane Kruger at the side of the stage, shadow conducting to help Beethoven keep time.
