Despite a much shallower story than Lean’s most popular works, the outdated view on racial issues, it not being a ‘pure’ adaptation of the original novel (apparently), as well as a thousand other problems, this is such a wonderfully humane film, and I find it a very fitting work for David Lean’s final film. The scope is on the level of Lawrence of Arabia, whilst staying a magnificent character-driven story, with effortless depth written into every single one, and has exceptionally bright, colourful cinematography.
