My introduction to Krzysztof Kieślowski in The Double Life of Véronique, a visually poetic, meditative film that manifests spiritual imagery of kindred souls. The movie that makes you feel its lingering presence, atmosphere and the colors before understanding it. Irène Jacob delivers a remarkable dual performance as Weronika/Véronique, two souls who live different places with identical, yet subtly different inner lives. Though, i sense a quiet lacuna in my connection to the story, its golden, dreamlike visuals continue to mesmerize me.

I loved this idea of an invisible connection between two lives, like a silent echo between two souls. Everything the film suggests — that diffuse intuition, that feeling that something exists without ever being named — is truly beautiful. The cinematography, the golden light, the music… everything feels like it’s gently floating.

It also reminded me of Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain in its visual poetry, in the way it turns reality into something almost magical.

But despite all that, there’s a real distance.
A part of me clearly stayed held back, like I was watching through glass. I admire what the film does, I understand it… but I don’t fully feel it.

And maybe that’s both its strength and its limit:
a beautiful film that never fully lets you in.

Im not gonna pretend that I understood everything on the first watch. This definitely needs a rewatch for me to understand it more, but other than that, this is an AMAZING film with very unique visuals, an absolutely heavenly score, a beautiful conclusion, and it’s just such a powerful film in general. One of Kieslowski’s finest works.

I am completely in love with Kieślowski’s movies. Like true love, infatuation, amour, just intense admiration for every aspect of his movies. I mean he made yellow look like the most beautiful color while constructing such a profound story. Not to mention that score holy shit.
