the saddest thing in life is wasted talent.man, where do i begin???? this movie is just perfect at it's core. it's not just a crime mob story—it's about choosing who you become when two worlds pull you in different directions.
a coming-of-age crime story with an elite soundtrack, an innocent love story, father figures and knowing what the difference of being loved and being feared is. i'm fucking hooked.
calogero is the man. i love this guy sm. the pain of being torn between two role models, unsure which one will guide the kind of man he'll become. he looks up to both his father and sonny, and it shows how many guys struggle with influence and identity. he experiences awkward, genuine first love, makes mistakes, and makes dumbass choices before knowing the weight of it. he can be a real piece of shit and i feel it.
it shows how something as pure as liking someone can become complicated because of the people around you.
at the same time, it's really about guidance and who raises you, and how. his dad teaches him values, honesty, hard work, doing the right thing. sonny, on the other hand, teaches him how the world actually works. and the movie doesn’t say one is completely right or wrong, it just shows how both shape him.
another thing, i'm a sucker for a good soundtrack. will i ever have another experience like hearing 'i only have eyes for you' by the flamingos while calogero looks at jane? absolutely fucking not. the use of afro music in a mostly white environment reminds me of the gap between culture and prejudice—while the neighborhood holds onto being racist, the music crosses those same limits. how connection can exist before people are willing to accept each other.
i absolutely loved every second of it. 2 hours of my life i'll forever wish i can relive again.
