It is 1595. Brutal wars have just ended in an uneasy peace between Protestant Sweden and Orthodox Russia. We focus on the spiritual defeats of two conquered Finnish brothers, one a hardened near-psychopathic war hero, the other a gentle scientist in an age with no use for such men. They find themselves in the swampy interior, demarcating the new border with a unit of sadistic Russians.

This is quite a beautiful piece of brooding cinema. The whole story is surrounded by sin and the toll it takes on man. A lot more than I was expecting to be honest. Though it seems to have two endings,. Maybe I misunderstood. But it chooses to end on a spooky jump scare that really cheapened the whole experience.

Moody and dark, but, unfortunately, Sauna seldom delivers. I did enjoy the setting (the grimy darkness of an oppressive swamp) and even though it added to the atmosphere of the whole film, I did not find myself spooked. The more subtle scares earlier on in the film had me believe that the foreboding attitude would eventually have a more substantial payoff. Still, the "payoff" the film provides is still just as dark and stylish as the rest of the film. Sauna is not a film that pulls you to the edge of your seat, but rather a film that you breathe in and enjoy for its horrific imagery.
