What an insane horror flick. It’s a haunted house movie the first half and an exorcism/possession film the second half. I’ve never seen anything quite like this. I mean this is so much better than the first Amityville and looking at the next EIGHT in the franchise, I’m pretty confident in saying that this is probably the best one. I mean it’s disgusting, it’s gnarly, it’s bloody, it’s gory, it’s downright gross, it’s scary, it’s traumatic, it’s sleazy, and it’s a damn good movie. As soon as I saw that Dino De Laurentiis produced this and Tommy Lee Wallace wrote it, I knew I was gonna be in for a good time. It’s also worth noting that Damiano Damiani directs the shit out of this. I swear, Italian horror filmmakers are the best. Damiani takes the general concept of Amityville, which in my opinion was gravely underutilized in the first movie (I’m sorry but the first Amityville is so boring and so slow, even if it has a handful of good moments), and turns it into a movie that is exquisitely shot, full of gialloesque tropes, and is even about how the evil of the house affects the family and how perverse evil can be. This movie certainly rides off the coattails of The Exorcist, but what this movie does so well is how it turns the demon exiting the body of the tormented soul into a physical transformation complete with a gnarly, bloody, and sick special effects smudge face monster. It’s amazing to say the least. And of course the haunted house stuff during the first half is great. Twirling beds, objects moving on their own, blood seeping from faucets, a scary ass basement, etc. And there are some disgusting moments during that first half. As the evil of the house corrupts each member of the family more and more, the worse and more uncomfortable things become. The dad is the epitome of bad dads, the mom is a devastating character who gets treated like shit, the teenage brother and sister have an incestuous relationship that grossed me the fuck out, and as this slowly shifts from a haunted house flick to a possession one, the teenage son/brother kills his family. This is a crazy movie to say the least. Also, shoutout to the actors, they did a great job (especially Diane Franklin and James Olson). Rutanya Alda is a bad actress but I can’t help but absolutely adore her overreacting and that death scene that looked SO fake. By the way, those POV tracking shots of the evil spirit were SICKKKKKKKK!!!!! I don’t see any other Amityville’s beating this for the number one spot in the franchise, however I will still watch the other EIGHT in the franchise because I can.

When I saw this was a lowly rated as it was, it was safe to say that my expectations were pretty damn low. But the score did such a good job of maintaining tension throughout the film, and the acting was incredible. The practical effects, especially with that end scene, were so grotesque and unnerving that although I didn't feel 'fear', I certainly felt discomfort. I think this is a pretty amazing movie and I don't think it should be as lowly rated as it is.

Better than the first by a looooong mile! Better scares, the cinematography is awesome (especially during Sonny’s possession sequence), the family dynamic is better and more fleshed out, and the atmosphere is dreadful from start to finish.
