Ok, so I love George A Romero and totally respect Stephen King’s status as a horror literary icon but Creepshow is just temu Tales from the Crypt right?
Inspired by the legendary 50s horror titles from publisher William Gaines’ EC comics such as Tales from the Crypt, Romero and King give us Creepshow, a five story anthology, using a forbidden comic thrown into the garbage by an irate parent as a framing device.
Ted Danson is up to his neck in it courtesy of Leslie Nielsen. Hal Holbrook finds a novel way to address his marital issues with Adrienne Barbeau. Ed Harris meets his new in-laws. E.G. Marshall is an asshole business man who has a problem with pest control and Stephen King (in a role that was surely the inspiration for Vincent D’onofrio in Men in Black) is a yokel who witnesses a meteorite crash landing.
The EC comics themselves handled this type of material way better as did the the later HBO Television adaptation (which also had way more gore and nudity). I honestly just kept awaiting the next story to begin hoping it would be better.
A pun-slinging Crypt Keeper making jokes about head was sorely missed.
