Maybe The Stupids were us all along. I had no interactions with the picture books as a child (though they seem pretty similar to the Dumb Bunnies books I did "read"), so the only reason I even knew this movie existed was because of its reputation for being terrible. Now, does it earn that reputation? Kinda. There were parts that were funny, but those total maybe 15% of the entire movie. Most of it is stupid in a way that makes you feel bad for it and not in a way where you laugh at it (like an old person getting scammed out of thousands of dollars by some dude in Uzbekistan pretending to be Elvis Vs a movie like Dumb and Dumber). The acting isn't great and there is so much ADR that it's very distracting. I think the real problem is that we've seen this all before so many times; it's all Slapstick 101. Like, Mr. Magoo has been around forever. The Three Stooges were doing this shit in the 20's. The only twist is that these are supposed to be lovable, good hearted dipshits, but we've already seen Charlie Chaplin do a lot of that. The Stupids benefits from having more advanced technologies available, but then they through in the cat and dog, which I honestly don't know if they were an earnest attempt at CGI or if they purposefully looked like shit. Either way, The Stupids is too tame and cliché to work.
