“it doesn’t move”
“what a shame we can’t play with her anymore”
‘fantastic planet’ is a surrealist science-fiction animation, in the planet ygam, blue-skinned giant alien creatures reign supreme and keeps ‘oms’ (humans) as pets, and later try to exterminate them. it’s basically just avatar: except a lot cooler. it’s definitely absurd on first glance, but it’s surprisingly got a lot of depth to it. it shows a futuristic land, where humans no longer dominate, and the power kinda switches: from humans controlling animals, using them for meat and clothing, to then these alien creatures treating humans like pets, feeling indifference whether they live or die, as they’re seen as playthings. by this, it makes you gain more empathy for animals, as the events of this movie are quite realistic to how humans currently treat animals - and through putting humans in this scenarios, it makes you reevaluate the ethics of animal cruelty. also, the power dynamic of the oms vs draggs, mirrors the relationship between the soviet union and the satellite states, as they’re unable to break free from their control. ‘fantastic planet’ has some clear themes of oppression - this fictional situation of the draggs exploiting the oms can be seen in many real life events - like the holocaust, or the civil rights movement. besides the powerful themes of human rights and racism, there’s various obvious other reasons why i love this movie as much as i do. it’s a striking fever-dream, and it does this particularly through its really unique hand-drawn artstyle. it’s filled with unusual flora + fauna - headless dancing statues, gurgling plants, and then the aquatic alien creatures that have red eyes of course. the general visuals are gorgeous - i’ve never seen something so entrancing, so absurd. the soundtrack is wildly haunting, and psychedelic. that probably heights the surreal atmosphere - but it was so odd, yet so like elegant - which successfully creates an otherworldly planet. overall, fantastic planet is simply great, a nihilistic fever-dream that just gets more unhinged by the minute.
