I finished the James Bond series a few days ago and rewatched the first two Austin Powers movies afterward because it felt like the only way to finish a Bond marathon off right. When I was done with Powers, I was still in the mood for a good ol’ spoof. The Beatles are my second favorite band and with all of The Beatles biopic photos coming out recently (which don’t look good, what did they do to George?????), I thought it was the perfect time to watch THE RUTLES!!! This is a hilarious mockumentary!!! Some of the Monty Python guys including Eric Idle and Neil Innes (the seventh python) team up with some of the SNL guys such as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and John Belushi in order to create a brilliant parody of the Fab Four, who are otherwise known as the Pre-Fab Four in this flick. I love how they pretty much cover all of the iconic looks, moments, and albums that The Beatles did themselves. It’s honestly impressive how they were able to change the song lyrics and titles of some iconic Beatles songs such as Ouch! instead of Help! and Get up and Go instead of Get Back. The songs are genuinely great and very catchy, much like the music of the actual Beatles. Each one of The Rutles look simultaneously just like The Beatles and nothing like them at all, it’s beautiful!! I love their names too. Nasty, Dirk, Barry, and Stig. I could tell who each one was parodying from the beginning!! The cameo by George Harrison was one of my favorite scenes and I DID NOT expect to see THE Mick Jagger answer interview questions numerous times throughout. Eric Idle is great and really carries this movie in my opinion. All in all, this is a great look at the history of The Rutles and is honestly not too shabby at going over the history of The Beatles if you know it quite well. I’m definitely gonna be adding some of The Rutles’ songs to my playlist!! They are unironically amazing!!!! Doubleback Alley might be my favorite song of theirs!! By the way, I loved it whenever they parodied The Beatles’ movies such as Help! (Ouch!), Magical Mystery Tour (Tragical History Tour), and A Hard Day’s Night (A Hard Day’s Rut). I’m ready for The Rutles 2!!
