Captain Courageous, not to be confused with the 1991 documentary on Collingwood Captain Tony Shaw, is a 1937 adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s book of the same name, directed by Wizard of Oz maestro Victor Fleming.
Harvey (Freddie Bartholomew) is a spoiled entitled brat, suspended from his boarding school for trying to lord his Dad’s wealth over everyone (already you have to suspend disbelief because as if the rich ever live up to consequences), who then get falls into the ocean and is rescued by a bunch of of rowdy fisherman, including a Spencer Tracey as Manuel (attempting a Portuguese accent) and Lionel Barrymore as Captain Disko (sadly his last name is not Stu).
Despite Harvey’s protestations, there ain’t no way this crew are missing out on their potentially lucrative fishing haul, so young Harvey has to stick it out on board for three months, learning many a valuable life lesson.
A decent boy’s own adventure type tale, with a delicious anti-capitalist view, maybe we could throw song adult billionaire styles over board too?
But don’t worry about the rescue this time…
