I don’t have red hair, wouldn’t know the first thing about raising a barn, can’t dance for shit and don’t particularly like my own brothers, but it’s hard not to like the Pontipee brethren and their prospective brides in this bright and cheery movie musical about mountain love.
Just don’t think too much on the actual messaging because oh boy…but more on that later.
Adam Pontipee (Howard Keel) heads into town looking for a wife and strikes it lucky with Milly (Jane Powell), who is surprised when she arrives back at his mountain homestead to find 6 other Pontipee brothers, all in varying stakes of ramshackle rough and readiness, who she sets to making over so they too can find wives.
Russ Tamblyn AKA Doctor Jacoby plays youngest bro Gideon and Catwoman herself Julie Newman is one of courted towns women.
I was onboard with the upbeat vibe of this film UNTIL Adam breaks into his song about the ‘sobbin women’ and hatches a plan for the brothers to kidnap gals from the local town and bring the up to the mountain for the winter. What the actual fuck. I know it was the 50s but come on?!
Now at least Milly stands up to Adam, and he does eventually see sense (but only when he becomes a girl dad and imagines what it if were his daughter) but ultimately every kidnapped does fall in love with a brother so what message are we really sending here?
