Week 26: ****Gunfights Down Under

I’ve been eyeing The Proposition for years now and even though there are some criticism to be made I’m happy to say it’s really damn good. First of all it’s incredible how this is able to feel very much like the American westerns and a big piece of that came through this amazing technical work, the cinematography is truly some of the best I’ve ever seen in a western and the score acts as yet another gorgeous scores that does so well in creating these atmospheres. The story also gets a lot of that Western feeling in the concept, the foundations for this story could’ve absolutely been made by an Italian director in the sixties and having that with the achievements behind the camera comes together to create one of my new favorite Western worlds. Sadly I just think this story tries too much thematically, even though Emily Watson was quite good when considering the conclusion the themes her character added to this were unnecessary and there were a few other themes and sub-plots that just didn’t get the conclusions they deserved and honestly needed for this movie to be more successful in my eyes. And with how the redemption saga we did get a real conclusion to didn’t do all that much for me I’m just disappointed that this story wasn’t able to match the level of quality Hillcoat’s direction, the score, the editing, and the cinematography all brought this. I will say that the script telling that story was actually pretty good, it had plenty of high spots throughout and it allowed for individual performers like Pearce, Winstone, Watson, and especially John Hurt in his few scenes to shine with some nicely written monologues. In the end I get why this story would lose people but I also see why this worked like a charm on some, it’s a very well made slow-burn western drama that does so much right in the way of western filmmaking and for that alone I can see myself revisiting this multiple times through the rest of my life and enjoying it more each time.

this is a film that feels like it should be great, and there are many good things about it. however stuff like some of the acting and dialogue feels really long and really safe which makes it all really meh. watching this feels like a debutant film from a really good director, as there are positives but its all a bit of a shambles.
