I was very tired watching this movie because I managed to get about 5 hours of sleep due to neck pain. Perhaps the rating will be the same on a rewatch, but the film still held a power to it that was undeniable.

The choice to show the suicides on screen, suing the backdrop of great interviews with their friends and family is one that sparks a conversation. This film is meant to start a long conversation like all of documentaries. How they go about it could be exploitative or purposeful. I feel that the on screen fits both categories as it feels wrong in a way to watch people's final moments but unlike Faces of Death, it feels like it has a genuine purpose to being shown.

It's presented decently and down of the shots are cool but the film is mainly focused on the emotions of the people who suffered, those who are currently suffering, and the people caught in the middle. It feels like a YouTube video in a way. A good YouTube video, but not a theatrical documentary.

I literally couldn’t even bring myself to actually even watch this.. the fact that someone SET UP a whole camera just to record people plummeting to their death, and proceeded to talk to the relatives asking pretty personal questions. I don’t know I just even just the bits that I watched made me heavy and I will never watch this again and wouldn’t recommend it even on my worst enemy.

Not to mention we just watched gene contemplating if he wanted to do it or not for NINETY MINUTES?? And the people behind the camera KNEW and didn’t do anything or show a single ounce of remorse or empathy to try and help this man..his story was literally a build up for us to see him jump to his death. THE FIRST SCENE ALONE!!! Made me heavy and immediately think about what I am watching. I could never possibly understand how a person could record this for a documentary—I just don’t.

Honestly I think it would be different if they were to just ASK people about their relatives who died from the bridge ( meaning it could still hold its main idea of THE BRIDGE)wether that be sui**** or something else, rather then record people literally jumping off the bridge. not to say it would be totally different. But I do think that them recording these people jumping off not knowing what they have going on and the people don’t even know that they’re being recorded, is just disrespectful and disgusting to those who passed from that and also the relatives of those individuals.

This is a heartbreaking film that feels immoral and cruel, while it has some emotional moments, points that i teared up, the feeling of the film being manipulative just felt gross. Gross to record nearly all of the deaths that had occurred that year and for hours simply… no intervention, no calls or action? It felt like a person who had encouraged something to happen on the sidelines to make sure something suspenseful would happen from the real death and loss of a human life.

Don’t get me wrong, as a film itself the editing, pacing, order and all are a mess. it’s still an emotional movie. but i can’t get this horrible exploitative feel this journalistic documentary acts while also trying to make more action out of tragedy. 

it’s hard to discuss this film without that first impression of morals being displayed by the director and team behind the cameras. but it also feels like a real and sometimes genuinely empathetic look into the lives affected by suicide and what it may look like. it’s brutal and it’s raw, and it was perfectly encapsulated in this film and as i stated previously. Heartbreaking
