Here’s a few of cool Jaws facts I wrote down because I have to write a short paper on the production of this movie!
- The footage of real sharks was filmed by using a scaled down cage with 15 ft sharks because the shark was supposed to be 25 ft in the film.
- The actual shark being filmed got caught in the ropes in the scene where the shark thrashes on top of the cage. When a shark feels trapped they freak out and that’s why this happened. It was unintentional! (the shark was fine though and he got free of the ropes and swam away).
- In the opening scene they used cables attached to the girl pulled by people on the beach to drag her across the water.
- There was a full sized shark on a crane and a set of fins used for when you can only see the fins above water. There was also a left to right shark with no left side, and a right to left shark with no right side so they could put hoses, mechanics, etc on the side that wasn’t shown on camera. 4 sharks!!
- The mechanical sharks were notoriously hard to work with because the ocean was so rough on the mechanics (most people know this).
- They had a buffet about 4-5 months into the shoot where everyone came together. Roy Schieder mentioned something about having a food fight and all of the sudden food was being thrown everywhere. They had a great time lol.
- The scene where the severed head falls out of the boat was refilmed in the editor, Verna Fields’ pool to sync it better with the music.
Super cool to see tons of bts photos, videos, and just hear what went down on and off set with the cast and crew. Awesome documentary.
