“so no cheerleader will ever have to rob a bank again”
this movie is just proof that rotten tomatoes is the worst movie site. ever. the fact this only had 30% critic score is crazy? do people just not enjoy whimsy? sugar & spice is an incredibly fun, smart dark satire that makes fun of highschool tropes and suburban perfection, being more sassy than other teen comedies of the era. this film has major girl empowerment themes - a girl gets pregnant in highschool, and her friends need to help her in raising her future child, so they do an armed robbery at a local supermarket wearing really creepy/cutesy doll masks to steal money to support the teen mother. it brings some really surreal, comedic, risky and ridiculous ideas to the teen genre, and it’s absurd, campy style of humour is the reason this stand out from other girly comedies from the 2000s. the characters are all caricatures, and i honestly use that as a compliment. they all fulfil their different purpose, such as a himbo boyfriend, the nerdy girl, the popular girl, the unsocialised farm girl. they don’t have much depth, and yet they still manage to be likeable, and decently memorable. it’s a quirky teen comedy that very much feels like a twisted dream, it’s sharp and snappy at a sleak 81 minutes: and i couldn’t possibly want anything more from a movie like this. it has some really niche pop culture references and i think the dialogue is sharp and intelligent, in comparison to its simple minded characters. great feminist themes, and overall a really bizarre feel-good comedy that is a must watch for lovers of 2000s comedies.
