Never before have I seen Nazis depicted in such a “cool” way. In this movie, the Hitler Youth just seem like any young men’s or boy scout group where the boys all hangout, all while doing things like going on hikes, doing exercise, or singing fun songs. There isn’t a single negative depiction of Naziism in this film, which is interesting considering how evil they would turn out to be. The movie reminded me of Top Gun in that it was obviously targeted towards youth and wanted to show how awesome it would be to join the Nazi party. After doing some research myself, I learned this movie was pretty successful. So, I guess the depiction of Naziism as something worth joining worked very well.
Since this came out right at the beginning of Naziism, there was no real history or memory to go off of. However, I think the Nazis used their memories of everything negative about the Communist Party to make them look as despicable as possible in this movie. Ironically, now history has shown that both of these parties would lead to death and destruction for many people.
