the hatchet franchise remains one of my most beloved horror series ever. and the 3rd is definitely a worthy contender.
the first hatchet films is one of my favourites of the 2000s, as i love how it has a really 80s grindhouse atmosphere and the characters are really interesting, the original film is definitely the best in the trilogy. the second one is a major decline in quality, while it has some amazing kills and the same rural setting it just lacks the grimy dirtiness of the 2006 film. i think the third film is at a pretty equal level to the second film, except i think it’s slightly better. it’s straight after the events of the second film, as these films happen in 3 days or less, this time marybeth as yet again survived yet this time she just looks emotionless, covered in blood armed and walking into a police station, honestly not really a good look. she’s obviously a suspect for the murders as she goes on about an urban legend ‘victor crowley’ everyone sees her as a terrible liar, yet they still check it out anyway. amanda is her only believer as she has a blog about victor crowley, and she knows how to kill him. the events of this film are relatively similar to the first, a group of men and two women go into the dark swamps while looking for the beast, and obviously they’re not successful. i’m a massive whore for the gore in these films, and this film just didn’t disappoint, even if i think the kills are weaker in this than the prior films. victor crowley just comes up with the most brutal ways of execution, decapitation, mushed heads and torn off limbs. the blood in these films are great, no cgi and just really smoky looking as it completely shoots out. a group of 3 people hide in a random ambulance as victor crowley tries to get in and somehow doesn’t, he torments them until only one remains just because the other two are void of common sense. as amanda and the police dude escape the confederate dudes house, they carry mary beth’s dads ashes as an attempt to finally exterminate victor crowley once and for all, they all arrive and marybeth smashes the ashes onto him, and he melts.. 😭. the reason this is slightly better than the second is it just has a really grimy atmosphere to it. but it definitely doesn’t come close to the excellence of the first film, as they run around the dark swamp while a undead maniac chases. so excited to finish the franchise, even if i’ll miss watching these films for the first time.
