I am legitimately confused as to what the purpose of this was. In the beginning, it felt like it was made bad on purpose, but the farther in we go, the movie clearly thinks it has something deeply profound that it's saying, so maybe it's just made by someone who sucks at animation (and story writing). I had to finish this one by myself, as the rest of the movie night crew tapped out at the beastiality (completely understandable) and I imagine this movie is too much for most people. I grew up in the time of Rotten.com and New Grounds, so the era of try-hard, edgelord, bullshit were my formative years. Where the Dead Go to Die absolutely feels like something I would have found on the "adult" side of New Grounds in the early 2000's: it's outrageous just for the shock value, it's stupid, and it looks like shit. Now this is where my conundrum comes up again; was it made to look shitty (like K-Pop Demon Huneters was) or was it made by someone trying their best with their (very) limited skill set (like a Niel Breen movie). I mean, sometimes it almost looks okay, but then shit like liquid effects or the constant clipping (the first guy's hair is always clipping through his own head) make me think no one could have done that and actually thought it looked good enough for the final product. The story though feels authentic; even if it's fucking dumb and nonsensical, I think they were really trying to make something meaningful and deep (they failed, but I think it was a true effort from someone who still tells dead baby jokes). To be blunt, I knew this was going to be a bad movie, but I thought it was going to be hilariously bad and something perfect for a bad movie night where we just laugh at and shit on a movie. Unfortunately, there is no fun to be had here other than watching everyone's jaw drop constantly for the first 15 minutes, because after that, it just becomes cringy and depressing to watch. I guess maybe there are some people who could get a nostalgia buzz from the reminder of a bygone era where 4Chan was all the rage, and you tried multiple times with all your friends to sit in a dark room and listen to one of those "songs" that was supposed to make you feel like you were on LSD and that one friend would always pretend he was actually feeling it and talk about the aliens melting through the walls. Anyone born too early or too late to have had EBaums World bookmarked on the family desk top won't understand what I'm trying to say, but if you ever played The Torture Game, this is the movie version of that if it was made by someone who just discovered Adobe Premier. To be clear, this movie sucks, don't watch it, but there is just something about it that scratches the back of your brain and has you reminiscing about LimeWire and saying "safety" every time you'd fart (was that a nation wide thing or did all my friends just have brain damage?).
