Could've been shorter but still good. Loved the handling of drag. I didn't care too much for Anton Walbrook and would of just preferred more Hermann Thimig. My only real complaint is it being a little slow for me. Also I feel like out of every genre musicals benefited the most from widespread technicolor, the dance sequences would have been better with some color.

Imagine watching a German movie from 1933 at 2:30 am that you don't realize is a musical and the English subtitles don't even rhyme so it's just super confusing. I swear I had criticisms in mind when I was watching this, but honestly thinking back all I can remember are the positives. Do you know how rare it is to find a technically-not-gay 30s movie that sticks the conclusion? I did want to mention how over the top Victor's actor is, but honestly that's sort of how some theater kids are actually like, and also in 1933 everyone was still learning how to act in talkies so I can't be too negative. Everyone needs to watch more pre-1935 German film immediately.

One of the last gasps of the Weimar era and of the joyful queerness and freedom along with it. A very enjoyable and hilarious film, but there is pervading eeriness strictly due to the context of when and where this movie was made. Must get around to seeing the Blake Edwards remake.
