It's been a long time since I last read Persuasion, but after seeing all the bad reviews for the 2022 film I decided to watch a good old BBC adaptation instead, and it was lovely.

I really liked Amanda Root as Anne, and Ciarán Hinds was perfect as Wentworth. They had great chemistry and, of course, furtive, yearning looks à la Jane Austen. Similar to the BBC Pride and Prejudice, the costuming and makeup/hair was lovely, and the filming locations and sets were absolutely stunning. I loved the soundtrack; it was subtle but beautiful, just like Anne, and it was utilised well. The camerawork was a little slow at times, though, and I felt that the pace was really slow for the first half, and suddenly picked up during the last twenty minutes or so.

While I have a big soft spot for Pride and Prejudice, I'll never not swoon over 'You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope.' Thank you, Jane Austen.

While this adaptation features a strong commitment to authentic period costume design and traditional Regency aesthetics, the actual execution on screen falls flat.

Coming off the incredible visual quality, sharp. dialouge, and electric narrative momentum of Pride and Prejudice, this film feels agonisingly sluggish — I do recognise this is not an entirely fair comparison. The central romance completely lacks the vital spark and crucial psychological tension needed to carry a drama of this caliber, resulting in a narrative that feels boring. It is a slow, uninspired viewing experience that unfortunately drifts by without ever establishing real substance or a gripping sense of urgency.

Admittedly, I haven’t read the novel, though it is widely praised as a near-perfect adaptation. Much of my disappointment is rooted in expectation; I was promised something akin to Pride and Prejudice, which set a standard for energy and wit that this specific story was never meant to deliver.

My man got rejected, spent 8 and a half years alone and heartbroken, only to meet her again, realizes that she still loves him too, is completely scared that she‘ll reject him again, still asks her for marriage and finally gets the girl in the end. Dare I say he‘s better than Darcy.
