A visually outstanding masterclass.
Exposes the insidious patriarchal expectation to simply swallow mediocrity and smile. Yet, beneath the societal critique lies a deeper psychological tragedy: Maya is a victim of her own "Bovarysm" (yes, I only learned about it after watching the movie), trapped in a chronic, narcissistic inability to reconcile her grandiose romantic illusions with mundane reality. The film masterfully uses fractured mirror imagery to translate her dissolving ego as she chases a transcendent passion that doesn't exist, choosing a mystical disappearance over submission and accepting defeat to a mediocre world.
The fact that audiences at the time heavily rejected this only validates it. Absolutely beautiful.
