If I could 'Being John Malkovich' myself into any artist's mind at any point in time, I would go into Spike Lee's mind to decode why he made the last ten minutes of this movie the way he did.I'm sorry, Mr. Lee, but this is one of of your misses; despite this I would rather watch a Spike Lee miss than most other director's misses. There are so many ideas here that are tackled with nuance, and others that feel not as developed. The script is my biggest issue here, because at some point, it feels like 2 different movies are playing at the same time, resulting in the pacing feeling all over the place. Lee's direction is confident, and he does some interesting things with the camera. Wesley Snipes (my bisexuality has caused me to report that he is extremely handsome), Annabella Sciorra, John Turturro, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Halle Berry, and Tim Robbins are great. When discussing this movie, I don't think you can avoid talking about the fact that Samuel L Jackson is so fantastic in this movie that the Cannes Film Festival gave him the best supporting actor award in the festival's history. As I said, there is tons of great stuff here, but at times the narrative becomes too muddled, and the last 10 minutes of this movie don't do it any favors. I genuinely couldn't believe what I was seeing. I thought it was a joke, and the final shot is so laughably bad. Overall, I do think it's worth checking out, but be prepared to see a Spike Lee movie that doesn't find its footing.
