“what's wrong with you, man? everyone is fucking dying and you're fucking jerking off?! you sick fucking asshole!"
honestly i think everyone should always treat themselves to a bad movie once in a while, they’re often funny and also makes you realise how good everything else you watch is. and yeah, this was terrible lmao. i had an open mind going through though, eli roth, while i don’t particularly like the man, he has made some good films in the past, cabin fever and both hostel movies definitely coming to mind, and this honestly just felt like a parody. eli roth is often known for his black comedy, often not really landing and is instead entertaining just because of how badly a lot of it has aged: but damn this takes it to another level. a character choking his chicken in the amazon rainforest, a scene where the same character blames 9/11 on the government and then obviously the natives being portrayed as savage cannibals rather than humans. the cannibal subgenre is one which really is 50/50 on my enjoyment. on one side the idea of cannibalism is an intriguing one, which can be used effectively to make a really fun horror movie (the texas chainsaw massacre being one that came straight to my head), but on the other side a lot of it feels exploitative and constant racial stereotypes: like the cannibal holocaust and also this, being really tasteless as it mischaracterises amazon tribes as demons, when the people who disturb their peace are the real evil ones. also, the gore feels really tame in comparison to 70s grindhouse and even other eli roth movies. there’s a couple good use of practical effects, but not nearly as memorable as cabin fever or even hostel. while it does a fine job at building tension, a lot of the commentary feels stale and really in your face. atleast the plot was semi interesting.. the gore is good, sky ferreira is in it and the humour is tasteless, unhinged, trashy to the point where it comes enjoyable… probably could give this lower but i can’t say i totally hated it.
