Shabana azmi kaash mera gala ghot ke mujhe maarde

Honestly one of the best Indian films I've seen in a really long time. Ankur is such an interesting film that focuses on issues that unfortunately still prevail in India. First it talks about the systematic discrimination and exploitation that Dalits face in Indian society. Dalits in the caste system are at the bottom, they're so mistreated for example in this film, Shabana's character Lakshmi is asked to make tea and she is shocked when she is asked because I assume in Indian society Dalits cannot even make other higher castes tea which is just awful. There's such a power imbalance between Surya the landlords son who resides in a home and Lakshmi and her husband. Lakshmi is oppressed by society at large, both as a woman and a dalit. Surya acts as if he's progressive but truly he is a very hypocritical character. He takes advantage of Lakshmi and exploits her sexually. Lakshmi is passive in this film but the final scene where she's had enough and calls out Surya's hypocrisy is incredible. And the whole story of a woman having an affair out of marriage and even ending up pregnant is so revolutionary for Indian cinema even if she was sexually exploited by the larger powers here. Shabana Azmi gave a haunting performance. She's subtle and understated. She conveys so much with her eyes. But the final scene where she explodes off and rages is so perfect. The other actors Anant Nag and Sadhu Meher gave great performances. Shyam Benegal gave such an incredible direction on this film. Not shocked he is often considered one of the best directors in Indian cinema.
