the soloist is a clunky story of a homeless man’s relationship with music and struggles with mental illnesses. there’s some interesting values to be found here, but the story’s plethora of multiple themes makes it difficult to take something out of it. despite that, the cinematography and acting were very solid. a standout scene was the fantasia-esque abstract materialization of classical music. it would be very interesting to have had this perspective more throughout the film.

I’m not one to immediately declare a film White Saviour Nonsense but this really tested my patience at times. Downey doing his Zodiac character transposed to present day, basically. Foxx is as bad as you’d expect him to be playing a schizophrenic guy. Mostly well-directed and makes LA look dynamic, a few affecting scenes, always happy to watch Downey play a real character, but a very silly film with zero interest in classical music, which is the least you’d expect from the poster.
