Escape to Victory is not only a film that gives a message of hope, never to give up and to keep optimism in an awful situation, but one of the best football films I’ve ever seen. Somehow they have made an escape plan film from concentration camps and mixed it with a huge scale football game, and it actually works in an entertaining and tense fashion. Genuinely they must be thrilled with how the actual football game played out in this because it’s one of the most realistic and entertaining football I’ve seen in a movie, if I was to recommend a film that includes the sport this would be the film I’d say.
For me this is arguably up there for Stallone, if not one of his most underrated roles, he is hilarious in this while still staying as cool and athletic as possible with some great sporting and action moments. Micheal Caine is a fantastic leader figure in this film and keeps the hope up for all the players, always believing in them, sending a fantastic message through the films. Not only these lead roles, but the whole Ensemble cast were great, and including actual football players as the team was the greatest decision they could have made, it just made everything feel so special and authentic.
I think the director did a fantastic job in capturing the heart of the team, and shown some incredible film making during the football, capturing the excitement and spectacle of the sport so perfectly. The set pieces they created in this were so accurate and realistic which helped the cinematography hugely, and not only this, but the script is powerful, hilarious and just consistently good quality.
What a wilding surprising and entertaining watch.
Final Review: 8/10 or 4/5
