The other day I sought out to watch Hunger by Steve McQueen, a film about a hunger strike by IRA member Bobby Sands during The Troubles. I googled where to watch said film and Google showed a link to watch on Tubi for free. Perfect!
So I begin watching, it opens on a suspended car crash with a boy trapped inside, okay interesting I wonder how that plays into who Sands becomes 🤔. Then cuts to a woman screaming for help in the dark intercut with distorted drones, screams and images, oh wow McQueen is being quite daring with this film, I have no idea how this could tie into an IRA hunger strike. At this point, about five minutes into the film, I had suspicions I had been led astray by Google, confirmed when seeing Lori Heuring in a pitch black room NOT speaking in an Irish accent.
For the few minutes where I thought it was a film about an IRA hunger strike it felt pretty daring but once I realized it wasn’t I turned it off. I did however decide to come back to it and it’s about just as bad as I expected. Cliched, eye rolling at times, flat characters and predictable plot, though I will say that the violence is pretty visceral if you’re into that (I am not).
