“when its time to close the book, i’ll have no regrets. i’ve seen so many people live so badly, and so many die so well.”
death… the indiscriminate manner in which fate chooses who will be desolate and who will live in opulence… the seemingly never ending despair and misery taking place everywhere all the time… is there anything that’s been spared from this relentless, unfair, and oppressive devastation? expression… be it painting, film, literature, music, photography, dance, the expressive nature of the human soul cannot be killed, cannot be destroyed, cannot be crushed, no matter the physical or mental circumstances and environment, art can represent the pain or the ecstasy of what is that persons perspective of the human condition. this film, a still, ever expanding image of modern cruelty juxtaposed by a solemn yet profoundly beautiful narration from Jean-Luc Godard, explains and almost reminds us of this hopeful sanctuary for the heart and the mind.
this might be my favorite short film of all time. its punctual, its incredibly intelligent and impactful, its phenomenal, its perfect.
