"Is sex ever for free anyway" - JJ
For one of the first early mainstreamish British films focusing on black lesbian love I think it's fantastically underrated. There's so much in this, identity, sexuality, sex, class, race, societal pressures etc etc. While not perfect you've got to respect the ambition and scope of the whole thing. I think the premise is great and I like the depth and complexity of some of the issues addressed and represented rather than the usual stereotypical or flat two-dimensional caricatures we're used to. Plus some of it is quite funny, balances the serious and light hearted moments well.
Like I said It's not perfect and if it came out now, I think you'd be justified in judging it more harshly but all things considered i quite enjoyed it. It's a major milestone in British queer film history and I think that should be recognised.
